Phillips Steps Down

Red Deer Advocate - April 07, 2008 -

Red Deer Regional Airport is facing a critical turning point so now is the time to let someone else take over the helm, says outgoing CEO Merv Phillips.  Phillips says his decision to leave was planned for some time.  He is eager to pass on the torch to someone else when the Airport is undergoing transformation.  "It's a turning point for us," Phillips said.  "It's been such a hard sell to convince people of the importance of the airport, but I think we've finally done that now".  Airport Authority Chairman Randy Preece says "At the present time, we're a fairly small organization. The CEO really has to take care of everything out there".
Phillips says he will retire at the end of June so he can play more golf and do some traveling.

Government Funding for Red Deer Regional Airport

The Red Deer Regional Airport has received funding to enhance safety, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada through the 2008-2009 Airports Capital Assistance Program.  Bob Mills, MP for Red Deer, made the announcement at a crowded press conference in the terminal building.  The Red Deer Regional Airport received $2,131,063 to rehabilitate its airfield lighting system.  The Red Deer Regional Airport Authority CEO Merv Phillips says this funding is critical in the process of improving and increasing the use of the Regional Airport.  "This will mean more options for people flying out of our Airport", says Phillips.

Harvard Plane mounted at Regional Airport Red Deer

An aircraft used for NATO training in the 1960's is now on the parking lot in front of the terminal building.  The Harvard Mark IV "will be the first thing people see when they are coming into the airport" says Gary Hillman, executive committee member with the Red Deer Flying Club.  "This plane was the last Harvard to officially fly in Canada in 1965".
This story was reported by Erin Fawcett at the "Red Deer Express."

Major Study Released - Passenger Services and Investment for Regional Airport Red Deer

A study commissioned to attract additional passenger services and find new investment has been released.  1000 Central Albertans were asked about passenger service at the Airport. Travel agents and passengers were also interviewed.  Leisure travelers want to fly to Vancouver, Toronto and Kelowna.  Business travelers chose Northern Alberta as well as Vancouver and Toronto.  Other destinations chosen were Saskatoon, Las Vegas, Winnipeg, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. 70% of the respondents say they are willing to pay a premium for the convenience of flying from the Regional Airport Red Deer. Among other recommendations, the report concluded by encouraging the Regional Airport Authority to continue lobbying for capital funding to improve infrastructure at the Airport.
